10 Self-Storage Packing & Organization Tips

Self-Storage Packing & Organization Tips

If you’re a renter or homeowner who is looking to downsize or declutter your living space, self-storage may be a solution for you.

But before you reserve a unit, it’s important to organize and pack your belongings efficiently so they take up minimal space. Here are 10 tips to help you get started.

Tip #1: Keep an inventory of everything that you put into storage. This will come in handy when you need to retrieve something and can’t remember which box it’s in. It will also be helpful in case you need to make an insurance claim for lost or damaged items.

Tip #2: Make sure that all of your boxes are properly labeled with both the contents and the destination room. For example, “living room – lamp” or “kitchen – pots and pans.” This will save you a lot of time and frustration later on.

Tip #3: Use clear plastic bins instead of boxes whenever possible. Not only can you see what’s inside, but they’re also stackable and much more durable than cardboard boxes.

Tip #4: If you must use cardboard boxes, make sure they are double-walled for extra strength and protection of your belongings.

Tip #5: Fill up all empty spaces in your boxes and bins with packing peanuts, bubble wrap, or crumpled up newspaper. This will prevent your things from shifting around and getting damaged while in storage.

Tip #6: Store heavy items in smaller boxes so that they are easier to lift and carry.

Tip #7: Store light items in larger boxes so that you can fit more into each trip from the car to the storage unit.

Tip #8: Place all of your largest items along the walls of the storage unit so that you can maximize space in the center for smaller items.

Tip #9: Stack your boxes and bins up high, but be careful not to overload the shelves or racks – this could cause them to collapse under the weight.

Tip #10: Put a layer of plastic down on the floor before bringing anything into the storage unit. This will protect your belongings from any water or moisture that might seep in from the concrete floor.

At the end of the day, investing a little extra effort into packing and organizing can save you time, stress, and potential damage in the long run. So next time you rent a self storage unit, remember to approach it as both an art and a science. Your belongings will thank you for it.
