What Items Should Not Be Put in Self-Storage

You can rent a self-storage unit for the things you don’t have room for. Just about anything that’s taking up space can be put in storage to give you more room where you need it. That includes home, business, sporting goods, and more. There are some things that should not be stored in those units, though.

Some of the rules for storage items are designed to protect you and your items, but some of the rules are to protect others or the storage owners. Some items have legal issues and cannot be stored due to laws or ordinances.

  • The most obvious items that cannot be stored in a self-storage unit involve hazardous or toxic items.
  • Don’t store weapons and ammunition, explosives of any kind, or fireworks.
  • Hazardous materials like asbestos or bio hazards can’t be stored.
  • Don’t place gas tanks, gas, liquid or compressed, propane and tanks, acid, grease, fertilizer, paint, or chemicals.
  • Motor oil should be disposed of at the proper place, not placed in the storage unit.
  • Illegal drugs, legal or illegal narcotics, or medical waste can’t be stored there.

Sales representatives often find self-storage rental a great place to store their bulky inventory so it’s not in their garages, offices, or homes. Most items, including large medical equipment and cases of items are ok to store and it’s a good idea.

Some medical items, however, cannot be stored and you should view the list of acceptable items before you arrive at the storage facility.

As far as tires and vehicles are concerned, there is most commonly a limit to the number of tires that can be stored because they are costly to get rid of if you should default on the rental or for other reasons leave them in the storage unit.

Food items can be placed in storage for emergencies or other space problems. Make sure the food is not perishable and won’t attract rats or other pests. Meats, cereals, and produce generally are not allowed. Animals cannot be stored there whether they are living or dead, and plants shouldn’t be stored either.

Obviously, there is no use of storage units as residence, and therefore you will most likely not be allowed the use of freezers, refrigerators, heaters, or generators.
